President Muhammadu Buhari wants the Economic Financial Crimes Commission to continue investigating the former SGF and the former Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Babachir Lawal and Ayodele Oke, both of whom he sacked on Monday.

President Buhari, who said he was aware of the ongoing investigation, requested that the investigation agencies “go on with their work of investigation without any interference or hindrance.”

In a statement by his spokesperson Garba Shehu, President Buhari added that he is “fully conversant with the provisions of the constitution” and “will not stop the investigation of anyone because he has no such power under our laws.”

“This is a decision of the Supreme Court,” he stated.

Before the termination of their appointments, Lawal and Oke were initially on suspension since April 19 due to several fraud allegations

Lawal was suspended over alleged fraud in the North-East contracts, while Oke suspension was over claims on $43m found in an apartment in Ikoyi.

Premium Times reports that the president’s statement was in reaction to “criticisms that trailed the sack of Babachir Lawal and Ayodele Oke.”

However, many Nigerians also commended President Buahri’s decision to fire Lawal and Oke, and even asked that he ordered their arrest and prosecution.
