The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 40-year-old man, Clement Anthony, over the alleged murder of a community leader and recovered a locally made single-barrel firearm believed to have been used in the incident.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Nafiu Abubakar, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Bauchi on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the incident was reported at the ‘A’ Division Township Police Station on July 19, 2026, by a 47-year-old resident of Unguwar Ngas in Bauchi Local Government Area.
Habib said, “The complainant stated that on the same date, while at Unguwar Ngas, Inkil, Bauchi, one Clement Anthony, male, 40 years old, of the same address, armed himself with a locally made single-barrel gun and intentionally fired it at Mr Jacob Bature, male, 55 years old, Mai Anguwan Ngas, also of the same address. The victim sustained serious gunshot injuries to his right ribs and slumped unconscious, leaving him in a coma.”
He added, “He was immediately rushed to the ATBU Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, where a medical doctor examined him and confirmed him dead as a result of the gunshot. The corpse has since been deposited in the hospital morgue for further investigation.”
The police spokesperson said operatives moved swiftly after receiving the report and arrested the suspect. A locally made single-barrel firearm and one empty cartridge were also recovered from him.
Habib said the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet investigation.
He added, “The suspect will be charged in court upon the conclusion of the investigation.”
The statement also quoted the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, as condemning the incident and reaffirming the command’s determination to combat violent crimes in the state.
According to Habib, “The Commissioner of Police has condemned the act and assured members of the public that the Command remains committed to ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes are brought to justice.”
The police further urged residents to avoid the illegal possession of firearms and promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
