Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have apprehended a 70-year-old man, Okon Akpan, along with three others for alleged attempted murder and suspected involvement in cult-related activities in Uruk Anam Local Government Area.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, stated in a Friday release from Uyo that the arrests followed credible intelligence as part of ongoing efforts to eliminate violent crimes and criminal elements in the state.
The other suspects include John Samson, 45; Emmanuel Asuquo, 50; and Idorenyin Umoh, 22. They were taken into custody on March 20, 2026, at Ikot Asukpong Village in Uruk Anam LGA.
The statement revealed that the operation was prompted by a petition alleging attempted murder, malicious damage, and cult-related activities in the area.
“The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has recorded a major operational success in its continuous drive to curb violent crimes and criminality. Following a petition regarding alleged attempted murder, malicious damage, and cult activities, operatives acted promptly and professionally,” the statement read.
“Acting on credible intelligence, detectives successfully apprehended four suspects on March 20, 2026, at Ikot Asukpong Village in Uruk Anam Local Government Area. During the operation, one locally fabricated pistol and two long guns were recovered, supporting allegations of their involvement in criminal acts.”
DSP John added that investigations are ongoing to identify other members of the suspected gang and assured residents that proactive measures are in place to maintain peace.
“The command wishes to reassure the public that the situation remains calm and under control, with preventive steps implemented to avert any breach of peace. Investigations continue, and the suspects will be charged to court upon completion,” he said.
Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, reiterated the command’s dedication to protecting lives and property in the state and called on residents to provide timely and credible information to aid law enforcement efforts.
