Cross River varsity loses three students, staff in fatal auto crash

Three students and a staff member of the University of Cross River state have died in a road accident.

Multiple reports indicate that the accident occurred when a coaster bus conveying the students collided with a truck along the Calabar–Itu highway on Friday night. According to reports, the driver of the bus also didn’t make it out alive.

Onen Ebri, the university’s public relations officer (PRO), confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Saturday, noting that 24 students, including a staff member, were involved.

The accident reportedly occurred in Odukpani LGA of the state, with most of the victims said to be members of the university Students’ Union Government (SUG) returning from an official assignment held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state capital.

The deceased were identified as Solomon Uya, the SUG director of sports; Lucky Erim, president of the Faculty of Physical Sciences Students’ Association; Favour Darlington of the department of educational management; and Anthony Arikpo, the driver of the vehicle and an unnamed staff member of the institution.

Ebri said survivours are receiving medical attention at various hospitals, assuring that adequate care is being provided for them.

According to the spokesperson, Francisca Bassey, vice-chancellor of the university, and Stella Maris-Okey, deputy vice-chancellor (academic), visited the injured students to express solidarity and ensure that they receive proper treatment.

Ebri said the vice-chancellor reassured the injured students of the university’s unwavering support and commitment to their full recovery and well-being.
