Tinubu reshuffles Education Agencies, appoints new leaders

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a fresh set of appointments across major education institutions, naming new governing board chairmen and chief executives for agencies under the Federal Ministry of Education.

The changes affect the National Examinations Council (NECO), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the Federal Polytechnic N’yak-Shendam, and the National Library of Nigeria.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President named Prof. Modupe Adeola Adelabu as Chairman of NECO’s Governing Board while retaining the current Registrar, Prof. Ibrahim Dantani Wushishi.

Similarly, Prof. Babatunde Salako was appointed Chairman of NBTE, while the current Executive Secretary, Prof. Idris M. Bugaje, was reappointed for a second and final five-year term.

Salako, a respected academic and researcher, previously served as Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research from 2016 to 2024, where he strengthened research systems, expanded global partnerships, and upgraded institutional facilities.

At the Federal Polytechnic N’yak-Shendam, Engr. Dr Bongfa Binfa was appointed Rector for a single five-year term, following the end of the tenure of the pioneer rector, Dr Mukaila Zakari Ya’u, on March 16, 2026.

Binfa, who earned a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, previously served as Deputy Rector (Academic) at the Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas, Bonny, and had lectured at the Federal Polytechnic, Idah.

President Tinubu also renewed the tenure of Prof. Chinwe Veronica Anunobi as Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Library of Nigeria for a final five-year term.

Anunobi, first appointed on September 2, 2021, has driven reforms to transform the National Library into a technology-focused knowledge hub. Her initiatives include the National Repository of Nigeria, the Newspaper and Magazine Locator, the Index and Abstract to Nigerian Newspapers, and the National Virtual Library of Nigeria.

She has also played a key role in advancing the completion of the National Library Headquarters project in Abuja and plans to move heritage collections from 34 state branches to the new complex.

According to the statement, the renewal of her tenure is intended to sustain ongoing reforms, ensure the completion of the headquarters project, and support the rollout of the institution’s 2025–2030 Strategic Plan.
