WAEC releases 2025 WASSCE results, withholds 192,089

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the release of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results for candidates in Nigeria.

The examination took place over a span of eight weeks and one day, running from April 24 to June 20, 2025. Speaking during a press briefing held in Lagos yesterday, Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, Head of the Nigeria National Office of WAEC, described the conduct of the examination as a major success, despite a few challenges.

He noted that, in line with the council’s drive for improved service delivery, a computer-based WASSCE format was introduced for school candidates, giving them the option to choose between computer-based or traditional pen-and-paper formats.

Dr. Dangut revealed that a total of 1,973,365 candidates registered for the exam from 23,554 accredited secondary schools across the country, with 1,969,313 candidates eventually sitting for the exam. Additionally, 12,178 candidates with various special needs were among those who registered.

Of those who took the exam, 1,517,517 candidates (77.06%) had their results fully processed and released, while 451,796 candidates (22.94%) had one or more subjects still being processed due to pending issues. Dangut assured that efforts are underway to quickly resolve these issues and release the outstanding results in the coming days.

Performance analysis showed that 1,718,090 candidates (87.24%) secured credit and above in at least five subjects, regardless of whether English Language and/or Mathematics was included. However, only 754,545 candidates (38.32%) obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects including English Language and Mathematics.

Dr. Dangut highlighted a significant drop when comparing performance to the previous year. In the 2024 WASSCE, 72.12% of candidates met this benchmark, while in 2025, the figure dropped to 38.32%, marking a 33.8% decline in this key performance category.
