A father and his teenage daughter have lost their lives after falling into an abandoned dry well in Yancibi Village, Tsanyawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
The Kano State Fire Service disclosed the incident in a statement released on Tuesday by its spokesperson, ACFO Saminu Abdullahi.
According to the agency, a distress call was received on Monday evening reporting that 45-year-old Abubakar Abdullahi and his 15-year-old daughter, Fiddausi Abubakar, had fallen into the abandoned well.
Firefighters from the Tsanyawa station rushed to the scene and began rescue efforts, but poor visibility and challenging conditions forced them to suspend the operation until the following morning.
An emergency rescue team from the Fire Service headquarters was later deployed to assist with the operation.
“Our rescue team successfully recovered the victims from the well. They were brought out unconscious and were later confirmed dead,” the statement said.
After the recovery, the victims’ bodies were handed over to the Village Head of Yancibi, Shamsu Sani.
The Fire Service said preliminary investigations revealed that the teenage girl accidentally fell into the well, while her father entered in an attempt to rescue her but also became trapped.
“The girl accidentally fell into the well. Her father attempted to rescue her but was unable to escape, resulting in the tragic loss of both lives,” the statement added.
The agency sympathised with the family and urged members of the public to avoid entering wells without the necessary rescue equipment or trained emergency responders.
