‘Go compete with my children’ – MC Oluomo defends ‘Kundus’ comment

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) president, MC Oluomo, has addressed concerns regarding the wrong pronunciation of the word “kudos” as “kundus.”

Akinsanya spoke to union delegates in a widely shared video on Tuesday, acknowledging that he is aware of the jokes made about him but is unaffected.

He admitted to having little formal schooling and said that although he may not speak English well, he is proud of his children’s accomplishments as US and UK citizens.

Akinsanya emphasised his achievements, despite humble beginnings, stating he started as a bus conductor but worked his way up to become NURTW’s national president.

Oluomo said: “If you and my children come out to express yourself, I’m not sure you can beat them, they are highly educated. I trained my children properly with money. My children are citizens of America and the United Kingdom. I worked hard to get there.

“‘Kundusi!’ What happened? Grammars are too much. Grammar won’t finish Nigeria, I might not understand the English language, but I understand Yoruba.

“I started as a bus conductor, then as a treasurer of a unit of NURTW, to unit chairman, to branch deputy treasurer, to branch treasurer, to branch chairman, to state chairman, and then to national president. I worked hard to get here. I am not educated.

“So they are mocking me for saying ‘kundusi’, is my child not Qudus? You that you are educated, what did you do?”

His comment came after a previous viral clip in which he mistakenly used “kundus” while attempting to applaud the efforts of union members in Abuja.
