Grammy Award winner Peabo Bryson, the celebrated American R&B singer-songwriter known for his romantic ballads and iconic duets, has died at the age of 75.
Bryson passed away on June 2, 2026, surrounded by family and close friends, following complications from a stroke he suffered days earlier. His family confirmed his death in a statement, describing him as a cherished artiste whose music and voice touched audiences across the globe.
A two-time Grammy Award winner, Bryson built a career that spanned more than 50 years and became one of the most respected duet performers in contemporary music. In addition to solo successes such as If Ever You’re in My Arms Again, Can You Stop the Rain and Feel the Fire, he earned widespread acclaim through collaborations with some of the biggest names in the industry.
Among his most enduring partnerships was Tonight, I Celebrate My Love with Roberta Flack, a classic love song that became one of the standout romantic tracks of the 1980s. He also recorded notable duets with Natalie Cole, Kenny G and Whitney Houston, reinforcing his status as one of R&B’s premier vocal collaborators.
His international profile rose even higher in the early 1990s through Disney soundtrack hits. Beauty and the Beast, recorded with Celine Dion, won a Grammy Award in 1993. He later teamed up with Regina Belle for A Whole New World from Aladdin, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 and secured another Grammy.
Born Robert Peapo Bryson in Greenville, he began his music career with Moses Dillard and the Tex-Town Display before launching a successful solo career in the 1970s. During his lifetime, he released more than 20 albums and received eight Grammy nominations, earning recognition for his powerful baritone voice and emotionally rich performances.
In his final weeks, Bryson faced serious health complications. Family members and representatives said he suffered a stroke in late May and was receiving medical treatment. Although he had recovered from a heart attack in 2019, his health later declined. He died peacefully with loved ones by his side, only weeks before a planned series of performances in Oakland.
Paying tribute, his family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from fans worldwide and said Bryson’s music had become part of countless celebrations, love stories and treasured moments.
With a career defined by timeless songs, memorable duets and a distinctive voice, Bryson leaves behind a lasting legacy in R&B and popular music.
