Nigerian comedian Bovi Ugboma has opened up about how the death of his mother, Margaret Ugboma, influenced his creativity and helped him improve his craft.
Margaret passed away in 2016 at the age of 58.
Speaking in a recent interview on Beyond With Ezinne, Bovi reflected on the impact of her loss, revealing that he regularly sought his mother’s opinion and feedback on his ideas while she was alive.
He explained that after her death, his creative process changed significantly because he could no longer rely on her for brainstorming and guidance. According to him, the experience ultimately pushed his creativity to a new level.
He said the lessons his mother taught him over the years became a source of inspiration he could draw on in different situations.
“The passing of my mum didn’t affect my creativity or craft. If anything, I think it enhanced my craft to the next level because I realised I didn’t have anyone,” he said.
“She was the one I bounced everything off. She had been pouring into me, and I realised I had banks of lessons to draw from in different situations.”
Bovi further described his mother as his first love, saying her sudden death was painful and that he still remembers her “fondly” 10 years later.
“My mum was my person, my first love, and it was more painful because it was sudden. She was young and hadn’t reaped the fruits of her labour. It hurts; it never really goes away. It’s been 10 years now, and not a day has passed without me remembering her fondly,” he added.
