‘I never knew his profession’ – Davido speaks on friendship with Hushpuppi

Davido has talked about his past friendship with Hushpuppi, the online fraudster who was found guilty and is presently incarcerated in the US for 11 years.

The musician recently stated in an interview with the BagFuel podcast that although he was friends with Hushpuppi, he was not aware of his illicit actions.

By saying that he prays for Hushpuppi, he also alluded to his upcoming release.

The “Be There Still” hitmaker praised Hushpuppi’s extravagant lifestyle but underlined that the long-term costs of his behaviour outweighed the momentary comfort.

“Hushpuppi is coming out soon. He lived life. To me, it is not worth it to be locked up. But let me not make excuses for them. Some people are happy to ball for five years and that is it,” he said.

“In Nigeria, there is a kind of hardship you would face and you will be like, you know what? Let me ball for two years then I am good

“People are like that. My prayers go out to him. He was my friend. I just see him around, I never really knew what he was doing. But he lived a good life.”

In June 2020, Hushpuppi and eleven of his friends were arrested in the United Arab Emirates on charges of identity theft, banking fraud, scamming, impersonation, and hacking.

He entered a guilty plea to money laundering in 2021 after attempting to embezzle more than $1.1 million from a person looking to finance a school in Qatar.

In November 2022, he was found guilty of money laundering and given a sentence of 11 years and 3 months in a federal prison in the United States.
