‘It Takes Two,’ popular American rapper dies at 59 after private cancer battle

The American rapper famous for the hip hop classic ‘It Takes Two’, Rob Base, has died at the age of 59 following a battle with cancer.

The news of his passing was announced in a statement shared on his Instagram page, which revealed that the rapper died “peacefully” while “surrounded by family”.

“Today, we share the heartbreaking news that hip hop legend Rob Base passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, surrounded by family after a private battle with cancer,” the statement read.

“Rob’s music, energy, and legacy helped shape a generation and brought joy to millions around the world. Beyond the stage, he was a loving father, family man, friend, and creative force whose impact will never be forgotten.

“Thank you for the music, the memories, and the moments that became the soundtrack to our lives. Rest in Paradise, Rob Base.”

Born and raised in Harlem, Rob Base gained international fame alongside DJ E-Z Rock as part of the hip-hop duo behind the 1988 hit ‘It Takes Two’.

The song climbed to number three on the Billboard Hot Dance/Club Songs chart and later received platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America.

Over the years, the iconic track was sampled by artistes such as Snoop Dogg and the Black Eyed Peas. It also featured in movies including the 2009 romantic comedy ‘The Proposal’, starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds.

The song further cemented its cultural influence after appearing in the 2004 edition of the popular video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
