Kendrick Lamar becomes most awarded rapper in Grammy history

Kendrick Lamar has cemented his place in music history by becoming the most awarded rapper in Grammy Awards history, following a commanding performance at the 2026 ceremony held on Sunday, February 1.

The Compton native entered the night with 22 Grammy trophies and added five more to his collection, pushing his career total to 27. The achievement sees the 38-year-old move past Jay-Z’s previous record of 25 wins and overtake Kanye West, who holds 24, making Lamar the most decorated rapper ever at the Grammys.

The historic moment came early in the ceremony when Lamar won Best Rap Album for GNX, marking his third victory in the category after earlier wins for To Pimp a Butterfly in 2016 and Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers in 2023.

He went on to sweep the rap categories, claiming Best Rap Song for “Tv off” featuring Lefty Gunplay, Best Rap Performance for “Chains & Whips” alongside Clipse, and Best Melodic Rap Performance for “Luther,” his collaboration with SZA. Lamar also picked up Record of the Year for “Luther,” earning his second straight win in the general field and becoming the first rapper to secure back-to-back Record of the Year awards.

While GNX was nominated for Album of the Year and “Luther” for Song of the Year, Lamar did not win those categories. Nevertheless, with five victories from nine nominations, he emerged as the most successful artist of the night.

Accepting the Best Rap Album award, Lamar spoke on themes of perseverance, cultural duty, and the importance of storytelling.

The latest wins bring his Grammy tally to 27 awards from 66 nominations, underlining his long-standing dominance in rap categories and increasing recognition across major general fields. His Grammy journey stretches from early successes with “i” and “Alright” to recent triumphs with Not Like Us and GNX.

Lamar’s record-breaking feat has reignited conversations around generational shifts in hip-hop, with many pointing to his sustained artistic growth and deep cultural influence. Following the release of GNX in late 2024 and a highly publicized feud with Drake, Lamar has remained a central figure in hip-hop discussions.

With his latest Grammy success, Kendrick Lamar’s position as one of the most influential artists of his generation is firmly established—and with 27 wins, his record appears set to keep rising.
