My late husband restricted me from acting – Iya Awero

Veteran actress Lanre Hassan, widely known as Iya Awero, has opened up about the painful struggles in her marriage, describing how it deteriorated from encouragement to abuse.

In an interview on Behind The Fame African List, the Nollywood legend revealed that while her husband was initially supportive of her acting career during their courtship, he became controlling and physically abusive after they got married.

“He used to beat me just for going to movie locations,” she said, expressing disbelief at how his attitude changed despite his earlier support for her career.

The marriage, she disclosed, ended abruptly following his untimely death.

Reflecting on the experience, Iya Awero said she has since ruled out the idea of remarrying, citing the uncertainty and potential risks of future relationships.

She said, “Our love story is a little powerful. Because when we were still dating, he was very happy that he allowed me to act. He even came to watch me at rehearsals. But after we got married, he didn’t agree anymore. So sometimes, when I go to act and come home, he would beat me, saying, “Didn’t he warn me not to act.

“Though we didn’t get to enjoy the marriage for long because he died young. If you say you want to remarry, do you know what you’ll meet where you’re going?”.
