My Met Gala dress pays homage to Yoruba culture – Taraji P Henson

The Hollywood actress Taraji P. Henson has shared the source of inspiration for her 2025 Met Gala outfit.

This year’s Met Gala, which honoured the craftsmanship of black fashion with the subject “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” took place Monday night at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Notable Nigerians including Tems, Ayra Starr, Chimamanda Adichie, and Burna Boy dazzled on the red carpet as a result of the dress code, “Tailored for You,” which encouraged daring, customised ensembles.

Henson clarified in an interview with Entertainment Tonight that her all-white costume pays homage to her spiritual metamorphosis.

The Oscar-nominated actress said the outfit draws inspiration from the “Yoruba tradition where women honour deities through attire”.

Henson said she fought for the peace she is currently enjoying, adding that she is focused on her career.

“It is paying homage to the Yoruba culture and the women who paid honours to a deity. They wore white because it represented transformation and spirituality,” she said.

“I think that’s where I am right now. Because I am at peace. I fought for the peace that I have found now. I feel like I am in a transformation from the old me to a new me.

“I cannot explain it. It is overwhelming feeling of peace.”

Asked about being a single mum, Henson replied: “I am not dealing with anybody else’s son. Not ever, not anymore. That is why I do what I do”.
