Nollywood actor dies in South Africa months after surviving crash

A well-known Nollywood actor and content creator, Odira Nwobu, has died in South Africa, just five months after surviving a severe car crash.

His manager, Arthur Scott, confirmed the development to BBC Pidgin on Monday.

Scott explained that Nwobu had travelled to South Africa for a project with a brand he served as an ambassador.

He added that the actor had been receiving medical care for high blood pressure, though the exact cause of his sudden death on Monday has not yet been determined.

The announcement has shocked the entertainment community and his fans, especially due to its unexpected timing.

Only a day before his death, the lively actor had been posting photos and videos from his trip, making the news even more heartbreaking.

His passing also comes five months after the car accident that occurred along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in June.

The crash claimed several lives, while Nwobu and other survivors were taken to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment. His vehicle was severely damaged, with both the front and side crushed beyond repair.

Odira began his acting journey shortly after finishing secondary school and rose to fame through his role in ‘Joseph The Dreamer’.

The performance earned him a nomination for Best Comic Actor at the African Movie Academy Awards.

He appeared in numerous productions, including ‘Home Alone’, ‘Class Mugu’, ‘Village Rats’, ‘Goat Lover’, ‘Wayward Father’, ‘Ikpo’, ‘Village Priest’, and ‘Family Saga’.

Odira married Gifty in 2021, and the couple welcomed their first child, a daughter, in 2023.
