Veteran Nigerian Juju and Highlife musician Iyun Janet Ajilore, popularly known as Saint Janet, has been laid to rest in Abeokuta, Ogun State, weeks after her sudden death.
The legendary singer was buried on Wednesday at her residence, following a series of funeral activities attended by her children, family members, friends, fellow musicians and admirers.
Veteran Juju musician Gentleman Dele Taiwo was among those who joined the family and members of the music community to pay their final respects.
Emotional scenes from the burial showed Saint Janet’s children and other mourners gathered around her remains before she was finally committed to the earth.
The burial came after funeral activities began on Tuesday with a candlelight service, Christian wake and Artists’ Night held at the AIT/Faaji FM compound in Kola Alagbado, Lagos.
The family had previously announced that the late musician would be buried at her residence in Abeokuta.
Saint Janet, affectionately known as “Mama Yabis,” made a name for herself in Nigeria’s Juju and Highlife music scene with a distinctive style that combined music, humour, satire and provocative social commentary.
Her energetic stage performances and unconventional musical approach established her as one of the more recognisable personalities in the traditional music industry. Her outspoken public persona also frequently attracted controversy.
Her death had earlier plunged Nigeria’s entertainment industry into mourning, with tributes pouring in for the veteran musician whose career left a lasting mark on the Juju and Highlife scene.
