The Nigerian film industry is grieving the passing of veteran actor Olusegun Akinremi, fondly called Chief Kanran. In a striking coincidence, his final screen role was in Femi Adebayo’s movie, Seven Doors.
In a heartfelt tribute, Femi Adebayo admitted he never thought the film’s title symbolizing thresholds and transitions would tragically serve as a metaphor for Chief Kanran’s passage from this world.
“He played in Seven Doors, and now it feels like life mirrored art. It’s painful and shocking. Nobody thought it would be his last act,” Adebayo wrote.
The actor passed away in a Lagos hospital on Friday after a brief illness, shortly before his 70th birthday.
Colleagues recall that Kanran’s commitment was extraordinary, noting how he brought his trademark energy and passion to the set even while battling health challenges.
“He gave everything to that role, as if he knew it was his final performance,” a crew member told reporters off record.
Chief Kanran, who made his mark in the Yoruba theatre world, was admired for his powerful voice and remarkable versatility. For many, his passing after the completion of Seven Doors lends a bittersweet close to his illustrious career.
“Chief Kanran may have walked through the last door, but his voice and artistry will never be silenced,” Adebayo said.
Femi Adebayo’s tribute has stirred deep reflection in Nollywood, as colleagues and fans alike celebrate Kanran’s legacy and applaud his steadfast dedication to the craft right up to his last days.
