Singer Fola explains why he was called Wizkid in school

Nigerian Afrobeats singer Afolarin Odunlami, popularly known as Fola, has revealed that his schoolmates often compared his voice to that of Wizkid during his secondary school days.

He shared the experience in a recent interview on the I Said What I Said podcast, where he also discussed his early passion for music.

Fola recalled that he was in Senior Secondary School Three (SS3) when he broke his arm. By then, he had already developed an interest in singing and formed a band.

According to the singer, his bandmates nicknamed him Wizkid because of his naturally high-pitched voice.

“I had a former band in school then that we did songs together,” he said.

“Those girls were calling me Wizkid then; I had a tiny voice.

“If I play you the first song I recorded in the studio, you will think say na Wizkid.”

Last year, the artiste opened up about his first day in Lagos in 2018, which ended with him spending a night in a police cell.

He stated that the experience left him questioning his life choices at the time, but it ultimately became part of the story that shaped his rise in the music scene.
