Veteran journalist and diplomat Patrick Cole, father of Tonye Cole, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Rivers State in 2023, has died at the age of 86.
President Bola Tinubu announced Cole’s death in a statement he personally signed on Saturday, describing his career in journalism, diplomacy and public service as distinguished.
Cole served as managing director of the Daily Times from 1976 to 1980. He later became Nigeria’s ambassador to Brazil, holding the position from 1987 to 1990.
He also reportedly served in a diplomatic posting in Argentina and represented Nigeria at the United Nations (UN) and the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on several occasions.
According to media reports citing family sources, Cole died in London on Saturday.
Tinubu said he received the news of Cole’s passing with “profound sadness”, describing him as “a distinguished diplomat, journalist, politician, and public servant”.
“Ambassador Cole devoted his life to national service, bringing distinction to his work in diplomacy, journalism and politics,” the president said.
“His career reflected the enduring value of dialogue, tact, mutual respect and the pursuit of shared interests in advancing national development and international cooperation.”
The president also highlighted Cole’s contributions to Nigeria’s media industry, particularly during his tenure at the Daily Times.
“As Managing Director of the Daily Times, he upheld the vital role of the press in holding public officials accountable, speaking truth to power, and strengthening democratic governance,” he said.
“His legacy in journalism and public life remains an enduring part of our national story.”
Tinubu noted that Cole had lived through significant periods in Nigeria’s history and contributed to the country’s development through his involvement in journalism, diplomacy and public service.
He added that Cole’s life demonstrated the importance of experience, principled engagement and dedication to the public good.
The president extended his condolences to Cole’s family, friends and associates, expressing hope that memories of his life and achievements would provide them with comfort and strength during their bereavement.
