Why I play wicked roles on screen — Patience Ozokwo

Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwo has defended the villainous characters she frequently portrays in movies, saying the roles are designed to highlight social problems and teach important lessons.

Ozokwo, widely known as Mama G, spoke about the perception of her screen persona during a recent video conversation.

The 67-year-old actress said many people wrongly assume that her real-life character is similar to the harsh and wicked roles she often plays in films.

She explained that her performances are intended to bring attention to negative behaviours in society and encourage positive change.

“I feel bold to expose the ills in society. Those things happen and nobody wants to expose them. I am exposing them,” she said.

The actress stressed that her portrayals of strict mothers, wicked stepmothers and other antagonistic figures do not reflect her true personality.

According to her, she takes pride in playing such roles because many viewers understand the message behind the characters.

“I am not like that, but I expose it. I am extremely proud of myself and Mama G lovers are proud of me,” she added.

Ozokwo has enjoyed a long and successful career, becoming one of Nollywood’s most recognisable figures through her portrayal of authoritative and villainous characters.

Despite her on-screen reputation, she has repeatedly maintained that acting is simply her profession and that the characters she plays are separate from her real-life identity.
