Why I release socially conscious music – Falz

The Nigerian rapper and activist Falz has explained why he constantly addresses social concerns in his music.

The rapper is well-known for writing songs that frequently criticise social injustices and poor administration. Additionally, he led the 2020 #EndSARS demonstration.

Falz revealed during the WithChude Live event that members of his social circles frequently attempt to dissuade him from speaking out so much.

However, the 34-year-old artist highlighted that his surroundings have a significant impact on his art, making it impossible for him to remain mute.

“Like you said asides being warned to stay away… My friends in like social circles, they are always like ‘baba, what is your own?’. But at the end of the day, the kind of artiste that I am, I draw inspiration from my surroundings,” he said.

“This is what is happening around me, I have to talk about it. It is inevitable and for me, I feel passionate about these things that I speak about and a lot of times… Like I was talking about social circles and people trying to talk me down.

“A lot of times people tell me that these people you are fighting for, they will still fight you. I am like if I was thinking that I was fighting for somebody, I would not even doing it in the first place.

“For me, it is never even about that, this is just something I feel strongly about, something I do not agree with. Of course, I am going to talk about it. It is about compassion, humanity and that is it for me.”
