Veteran Nigerian comedian Alibaba has openly expressed his support for polygamy, explaining reasons “why a man should have multiple wives.”
He shared his perspective during a preview of an upcoming episode of The Clarity Zone podcast.
The 60-year-old entertainer, whose real name is Atunyota Alleluya Akpobome, highlighted various factors that sustain the practice, noting that in some situations, wives themselves initiate or support it.
According to him, some women prefer their husbands to marry another wife rather than keep mistresses, with a few even helping to choose the new partner. He also cited traditional customs involving widows as another driver of polygamy.
“Some people feel that if it is only one wife, you might not be able to control the wife. But if the wife knows you have more than one, she would calm down because she knows that if she misbehaves… So, there are different reasons for polygamy,” he said.
“I actually know of a woman in Ibadan who encouraged her husband to be polygamous. Most of them back then, I do not know who wants to doubt this, the women marry young girls and give them to the husband, and they do that because they do not want the man to have concubines.
“You have families where when the brother that marries a woman dies, and she is either just a new wife or has like two children, and they need the children to be taken care o,f and you do not want her to go to another family, they call all the brothers and say which of you can take over this girl and take care of her.
“So if the man already had a wife, that is a cause for polygamy. As much as people say it is not right, the same person would end up having three to five children outside.”
