Why I waited until I won a Grammy before losing my virginity — Singer

The American singer and songwriter, Lizzo, has disclosed that she remained a virgin until her 30s after making a personal promise to wait until she won a Grammy.

The 37-year-old shared this during an appearance on the Friends Keep Secret podcast, explaining that the decision was based on a long-held personal belief.

“I wasn’t even thinking about it. I just promised myself when I was younger that I would want to have sex until I won a Grammy,” she said.

Lizzo, born Melissa Viviane Jefferson, secured her first in 2020. She noted that even after reaching that milestone, intimacy was still not a priority for her.

“After I won a Grammy in 2020, it was not even in my cards,” she said.

The singer also admitted that she once felt uncomfortable about her virginity among friends, sometimes denying it in social settings.

“It was so embarrassing. I was in a friend group of girls… ‘Wait, Lizzo are you a virgin?’ And I remember being like, ‘No!’” she said.

She further revealed that she had her first kiss at 21, adding that her religious upbringing influenced her choices.

“It was religious for me too… we made a pact that we wouldn’t do anything before marriage,” she said.

At the 2020 Grammys, Lizzo won three awards, including Best Pop Solo Performance for ‘Truth Hurts,’ Best Urban Contemporary Album for ‘Cuz I Love You (Deluxe),’ and Best Traditional R&B Performance for ‘Jerome’.
