Afrobeats star Davido has recounted how he sought guidance from fellow Nigerian artistes Wizkid and Wande Coal while trying to balance his education with his growing music career.
The Grammy-nominated singer shared the experience in the Afrobeats Documentary, reflecting on the challenges he faced early in his career.
Davido said he approached Wizkid and Wande Coal for advice on how they managed to leave school and pursue music professionally.
“I asked Wizkid and Wande Coal how they left school to do music,” he said.
“They told me the only way was to blow up. I knew my dad wouldn’t allow me, but when ‘Dami Duro’ blew up, I couldn’t continue.”
He later returned to complete his education, graduating from Babcock University in 2015 with a degree in music.
In August, Davido and Wande Coal engaged in a heated exchange on social media over an unreleased version of a song.
Davido said Wande had brought the song to him to record a verse before the original was released.
He claimed the collaboration was shelved because Wande wanted to release the original first and later put out his contribution as a remix — an arrangement he rejected because “I didn’t record it as a remix”.
Reacting, Wande Coal questioned Davido’s claim that he had brought the song to him, explaining that the original single already had a scheduled release date.
He also accused Davido of trying to dictate the release of a song that belonged to him, boasting that it performed well without Davido’s contribution.
Davido responded with a taunt, using an insulting remark directed at Wande’s manhood: “No vex Mr little penis”.
Wande fired back with a jibe of his own, replying, “No vex too Mr. toto beggar.” He appeared to reference a viral video of Davido on his knees, allegedly persuading a woman to have sex with him.
