Eid: What to do on Arafat day (Tomorrow)

Arafat Day (9th of Dhul-Hijjah) is one of the holiest days in the Islamic calendar, particularly for Muslims who are not performing Hajj. It is a day filled with immense spiritual rewards, reflection, repentance and heartfelt supplication.

What to Do on Arafat Day (For Non-Pilgrims)

Fast

The Prophet Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:

“Fasting on the Day of Arafah expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year.”
(Muslim, 1162)

Fasting on this day is highly recommended for those who are not on Hajj.

Make Du‘a (Supplication)

Arafat Day is regarded as one of the best days of the year to make sincere prayers. Ask Allah for forgiveness, guidance, mercy and blessings for yourself, your family and others.

The Prophet Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:

“The best supplication is the supplication on the Day of Arafah.”
(Tirmidhi)

Seek Forgiveness (Istighfar)

Frequently say:

Astaghfirullah – “I seek forgiveness from Allah.”

Reflect upon your shortcomings and sincerely ask Allah for mercy and a fresh beginning.

Recite Tahleel, Takbeer and Tahmeed

Increase in the remembrance of Allah by frequently saying:

  • Tahleel: La ilaha illallah — There is no god but Allah
  • Takbeer: Allahu Akbar — Allah is the Greatest
  • Tahmeed: Alhamdulillah — All praise is due to Allah
  • Tasbeeh: Subhanallah — Glory be to Allah

Read the Qur’an

Spend time reciting and reflecting upon the Qur’an. You may choose to read Surah Al-Kahf or any other surah meaningful to you.

Perform Extra Prayers

Increase in nafl (voluntary) prayers, especially:

  • Salat ad-Duha
  • Qiyam al-Layl (night prayer)

Give Charity

Every good deed performed on this blessed day carries great reward. Giving sadaqah (charity) is highly encouraged.

For Pilgrims Performing Hajj

Muslims at Mount Arafat should:

  • Stand in Wuquf at Arafat from noon until sunset
  • Pray Dhuhr and Asr prayers shortened and combined
  • Make sincere du‘a while facing the Qiblah with humility until sunset

“Lā ilāha illallāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu’l-mulku wa lahu’l-ḥamdu wa huwa ‘alā kulli shay’in qadīr.”

Translation:
“There is no god but Allah, alone, without partner. To Him belongs the kingdom and all praise, and He has power over all things.”
