1. Homemade Fruit Smoothies
Blend fresh fruits such as banana, mango, pineapple, watermelon or strawberries with plain yoghurt or milk. Homemade smoothies can provide vitamins, minerals and other nutrients while satisfying a child’s desire for something sweet.
2. Fresh Fruit-Infused Water
If your child finds plain water boring, add slices of fruits such as oranges, strawberries, cucumber, lemon or watermelon. The drink gets a natural flavour without the large amount of added sugar found in many fizzy drinks.
3. Unsweetened Zobo Drink
Homemade zobo, made from hibiscus petals, can be a refreshing alternative. Prepare it without or with very little added sugar and flavour it naturally with fruits such as pineapple, ginger or orange.
4. Milk
Plain milk provides protein and important nutrients such as calcium. For younger children, choose the type of milk appropriate for their age rather than treating flavoured or sweetened milk drinks as everyday beverages.
5. Homemade Fruit Juice — in Moderation
Freshly prepared fruit juice can be an occasional alternative to fizzy drinks. However, whole fruit is generally a better choice because it contains fibre, and even unsweetened juice contains naturally occurring sugars. Avoid adding extra sugar.
The healthiest everyday choice: Water
While these options can add variety, water should remain the main drink for children. Making healthier drinks readily available at home can also make it easier for children to gradually reduce their dependence on fizzy drinks.
