A boat mishap has claimed the lives of 14 people in Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi.
The tragedy occurred at Gumbi village in Gumbi Ward of Yauri LGA after the victims had accompanied a bride to her matrimonial home in Gwarzo village, Ngaski Local Government Area.
The group were said to be returning from the ceremony when the overloaded boat capsized, plunging more than 100 passengers into the water.
Fourteen people — 13 women and one child — were reported to have lost their lives in the incident.
Governor Nasir Idris, who attended the funeral prayer, expressed his condolences to the bereaved families, the local government authorities, the emirate council and the people of Yauri.
He urged them to accept the tragedy as the will of Almighty God.
Represented by the Chairman of Yauri Local Government, Abubakar Shu’aibu, the governor prayed for the forgiveness of the deceased and asked that they be granted Aljannatul Firdaus.
“I appeal to you to accept this in good faith, bearing in mind that nothing happens without the knowledge of our Creator,” he said.
“God does what He wills at the time He wills, and no one has the right to question Him.”
All the victims have since been laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites.
