The African Action Congress, Oyo State chapter, has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to closely monitor the state government’s spending as the 2027 general elections approach.
The party said the move was aimed at promoting transparency and ensuring that public funds were properly managed, stressing that its petition should not be interpreted as an allegation of wrongdoing against the government or any individual.
The Oyo AAC Chairman, Kayode Babayomi, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, saying the party had become concerned about the government’s spending pattern ahead of the 2027 electoral season.
According to the party, the state’s resources should be used for the benefit of residents and not diverted to support political activities.
The AAC said it wanted the EFCC to keep a close watch on government expenditure during the election period and examine any spending that raised concerns.
The party maintained that it was not asking the anti-graft agency to assume that anyone had committed an offence, but rather to ensure that public money was protected and properly accounted for.
It said residents of Oyo State had the right to know how government funds were being spent.
In its September 2026 petition, the AAC cited developments it considered worthy of scrutiny, including expenditure reportedly linked to political conventions, the establishment of a new campaign office in Abuja and other activities occurring ahead of the election.
The petition was submitted through the party’s lawyers, Damilare Adenola and Co. Law Practice.
The AAC clarified that it was not accusing the government of committing any particular offence, but expressed concern that state resources could potentially be channelled into political or electioneering activities.
It therefore asked the EFCC to monitor the state’s finances and investigate any suspected diversion or misuse of public funds discovered during the process.
The party also urged the commission to take appropriate measures to protect Oyo State’s resources and strengthen public confidence in the management of government funds.
The development comes as Governor Seyi Makinde prepares for the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement. He was adopted as the party’s presidential candidate in May.
The AAC said its action was motivated by public interest and its desire to promote accountability in the management of Oyo State’s resources.
