Convener of the Alternative Movement, Segun Sowunmi, has criticised the 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, questioning the substance and practicality of some of his campaign proposals.
Sowunmi spoke on TVC’s Politics on Sunday while discussing the 2027 presidential race and whether the performance of President Bola Tinubu’s administration had strengthened the campaigns of Obi and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.
According to him, part of Obi’s political appeal stems from calls for equity for the South-East, which has not produced a president in the current republic.
Sowunmi, however, questioned some of Obi’s claims about his record as governor of Anambra State, particularly amid the ongoing debate over the state’s financial obligations under successive administrations.
He said Obi’s claim that his administration did not leave debts had been challenged by subsequent administrations, although he acknowledged that the matter remained disputed.
Turning to Obi’s campaign agenda, Sowunmi questioned the level of detail behind the former Anambra governor’s proposal to move Nigeria from consumption to production.
He argued that such a policy would require clear plans on implementation, funding, incentives and timelines, particularly regarding agricultural production.
Sowunmi also questioned how Obi’s proposed agricultural expansion in Niger State would be achieved, asking what incentives would be provided to encourage people to take up farming and how much the programme would cost.
He further argued that presidential campaign promises must account for the role of institutions such as the National Assembly, which approves budgets, as well as the civil service responsible for implementing government policies.
Sowunmi’s comments come as Obi, Atiku and other opposition figures continue preparations for the 2027 presidential election. Obi’s media office recently said he would focus his responses on presidential candidates rather than political surrogates.
