38 students arrested over Ekpoma protest will be released — Edo Commissioner

The Edo State Government on Wednesday announced that 38 students of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, arrested in connection with last weekend’s protest in the area, will be released.

The Commissioner for Education, Paddy Iyamu, disclosed this during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday. He said some of the students were freed on Tuesday, while the remaining ones are expected to regain their freedom on Wednesday.

Iyamu explained that the unrest was allegedly instigated by individuals residing outside Edo State, whom he described as the masterminds behind the violence that led to the destruction of properties.

According to him, items were also reportedly stolen from the palace of the traditional ruler in the area.

The commissioner added that with calm restored in the community, the state government has approved the resumption of academic activities.
