Abiodun urges fair process in new Awujale selection

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has urged the Awujale Chiefs in Council to ensure a fair and transparent process in selecting the next Awujale of Ijebuland.

The revered throne became vacant following the passing of Oba Sikiru Adetona on 13 July 2025 at the age of 91, after a reign spanning more than 65 years.

Speaking after meeting the Awujale Chiefs in Council at Iperu, Governor Abiodun stressed the need to fill the stool promptly, noting that “nature abhors a vacuum”. He assured the people of Ijebuland that his administration would support any candidate presented by the kingmakers.

“The process of installing another Awujale has begun. We agreed that all provisions in the Laws of Ijebuland will be strictly followed to ensure legitimacy and fairness,” Abiodun said, adding that the meeting dispelled rumours of division among the chiefs.

The governor expressed confidence that the process would be peaceful and provide equal opportunity for all contenders. He praised the council members for their role in sustaining peace and stability during Oba Adetona’s long reign.

Abiodun explained that he waited until the traditional 40-day mourning period had passed before holding the meeting. He described the chiefs as dedicated and united, affirming that “the council is intact, with no disharmony”.

He commiserated with the chiefs on the monarch’s passing and reiterated his confidence in their ability to guide the succession process without rancour.
