Abuja building collapse leaves one person injured

A construction worker has been injured after part of a building under construction gave way in Wuse II, Abuja, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed.

The incident happened on Durban Street at about 6:30 pm on Saturday, October 17, 2026.

In a statement released on Sunday, NEMA said its Abuja Operations Office received a report of the collapse and contacted relevant emergency agencies to respond.

The FCT Fire Service was among the agencies mobilised, while an emergency ambulance team from the AYA Response Bay was sent to the location to support rescue efforts.

“Findings at the scene indicated that the incident was minor and involved a five-storey building under construction that had been partially pulled down,” the statement partly read.

NEMA said the incident did not claim any life, adding that the injured worker was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The collapse comes amid previous incidents involving buildings in the Federal Capital Territory.

On September 7, 2026, a three-storey building in Wuse Zone 4 reportedly collapsed hours after development control officials sealed the property and asked occupants to leave because of concerns about its safety.

The building was said to have shown signs of structural problems before it came down. Emergency teams were subsequently deployed to the area.

Earlier, on May 16, 2026, another building under construction collapsed in Durumi 3, close to Gudu Market, killing at least five people and injuring several others.

Following the incident, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike ordered an investigation and warned construction developers against violating building regulations.

He also stressed the need for developers to comply with safety standards and permit the relevant authorities to inspect their projects.
