The ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Adamawa State, conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has registered 43,380 new voters as of July 7, 2026.
Figures released to Saturday PUNCH by the Adamawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Alhaji Mohammed Nura, indicate that by July 2, 2026, a total of 22,527 women and 20,853 men had completed registration, bringing the overall number of new registrants to 43,380.
Speaking with Saturday PUNCH, Nura, who served as chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Yobe State in 1994, explained that the registration exercise is intended to give citizens who turned 18 after the last general election the opportunity to vote in future elections.
He said, “The main purpose of the CVR exercise is to ensure that youths who could not participate in the last general elections because they were underage are given the opportunity to participate after attaining the constitutional voting age of 18.
“We were supposed to end the exercise on July 7, 2026, but I still believe the headquarters may approve an extension since the elections are still some time away.”
According to Nura, the exercise also allows voters who have relocated to transfer their registration to their current places of residence. In addition, individuals who have misplaced their Permanent Voter Cards can request replacements during the registration period.
He added that the initiative aims to ensure every eligible Nigerian is captured in the voter register and can take part in the general elections by choosing their preferred leaders.
The REC urged political parties across the state to encourage members who have not yet obtained voter cards to take advantage of the ongoing exercise.
He also expressed confidence in the commission’s readiness to deliver what he described as one of the most successful general elections in Nigeria’s history.
