Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has ordered the immediate suspension of all National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) activities in motor parks across the state as part of efforts to restore order and enhance public safety.
The directive was issued on Thursday after a meeting of the Osun State Security Council, which was chaired by the governor.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, the government said the decision followed extensive discussions on the state’s security situation and the need to restore peace and order in motor parks.
Adeleke also directed the police and other security agencies to enforce the suspension of NURTW activities immediately, while clarifying that the order does not amount to the closure of motor parks.
He also ordered the suspension of the collection of all levies in the parks and directed security agencies to arrest anyone parading as an official or executive of the union in any motor park.
“I hereby direct the Police and other security agencies to stop all activities of the union in all our parks across the state. I am not saying you should close the parks, but you should not allow anyone to operate in the parks in the name of the union.
“Anyone found contravening this order should be arrested for possible prosecution for disturbance of public peace,” the governor said.
The statement added that the heads of the various security agencies present at the meeting assured the Governor of their commitment to strictly enforce the directive.
To ensure compliance, Governor Adeleke also approved the immediate establishment of a Rapid Response Squad comprising personnel from all security agencies operating in the state.
The meeting was attended by top security chiefs, including representatives of the Nigeria Police Force from the Osun State Command and Zone 11, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Navy, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigerian Correctional Service, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), and the Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun). Also present were the Deputy Governor, the Chief of Staff, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, and the Special Adviser on Security Matters.
