Akinrinade at 87: He chose democracy over dictatorship — Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has celebrated former Chief of Army Staff, General Alani Ipoola Akinrinade (rtd), on his 87th birthday, praising the elder statesman for standing with democracy rather than dictatorship at a time when such a position carried significant risks.

Tinubu described Akinrinade, a leading figure in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) during the campaign against military rule and the struggle to restore the June 12 mandate, as one of the individuals whose sacrifices contributed to the emergence of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, congratulated the retired General, describing him as a distinguished statesman, courageous soldier and patriotic Nigerian who dedicated his life to the country.

“General Akinrinade stood on the right side of history. When it was dangerous to do so, he chose democracy over dictatorship, the people over power.

“He is one of the heroes who made the Fourth Republic possible. Nigeria will forever be grateful for his courage and sacrifice”, Tinubu said.

The President noted that Akinrinade’s contributions extended from his distinguished military career to his involvement in the pro-democracy struggle that followed the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

Tinubu further stated that the retired General’s legacy is “etched in gold” in Nigeria’s history, particularly because of his military service and role in the struggle for the restoration of democratic governance.

Akinrinade, a veteran of the Nigerian Civil War, rose through the ranks to become Chief of Army Staff and later Chief of Defence Staff before retiring from military service.

Following his retirement, he became a prominent voice against military dictatorship, playing an active role in NADECO and the campaign for the restoration of the June 12 mandate and democratic rule.

Tinubu also praised Akinrinade for his continued involvement in national affairs as an elder statesman and for what he described as his enduring voice of wisdom, moderation and commitment to Nigeria’s unity.

On behalf of the Federal Government and Nigerians, the President prayed for the retired General to enjoy continued good health, peace of mind and many more years of meaningful contributions.

He also wished Akinrinade a happy and fulfilling 87th birthday.
