Akwa Ibom governor warns contractors over delayed projects

Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has issued a stern warning to contractors handling government projects, saying his administration will not hesitate to revoke agreements where work is progressing poorly or has stalled.

Speaking during a media interaction in Uyo on Saturday, the governor stressed that public projects must be completed on schedule to ensure residents enjoy the benefits of governance and to prevent waste of taxpayers’ money.

Eno expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of work on some projects across the state, particularly the Tabernacle Road project in Uyo and the Midim Atan–Etim Ekpo Road in Essien Udim Local Government Area. He noted that despite government support and funding, the expected progress had not been achieved.

The governor pointed out that the Tabernacle Road contract was re-awarded in February 2024, yet the project remains unfinished, a situation he described as unacceptable.

Highlighting achievements of his administration, Eno said significant investments had been made in infrastructure, resulting in the construction of over 1,300 kilometres of roads and nearly 40 bridges within three years. He added that several inherited projects had also been completed, helping to improve connectivity and economic activities across the state.

“Some of them are the Ikot Esu-Otomo-Azumini Road in Ika, Pepsi Junction-Ukpom-Abak Road, Ikot Ekaide and Ikot Okoro Bridges among others.

“We are currently implementing different strategic road projects across the state, including the dualisation of Ring Road III, reconstruction of Ikot Akpadem-Iko Road with bridges, among others,” he said.

As part of efforts to improve road conditions in the state capital, the governor announced plans to establish a committee involving media practitioners and civil society groups to identify and address potholes within Uyo.

He assured residents that his administration remains committed to projects that enhance living standards and called on citizens to continue supporting government initiatives through constructive engagement and feedback.
