The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Ama, has ordered the command’s operational and investigative units to intensify efforts to identify and arrest those responsible for the killings that occurred in Awka, the state capital, on Sunday night.
Ama gave the directive on Monday after a two-hour closed-door meeting with the command’s strategic and operational officers to review information gathered from members of the public, particularly residents of Awka.
The meeting followed the killing of a media personality, Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as Azia Nwosu, and another unidentified person by yet-to-be-identified assailants.
The police commissioner also visited Nwosu’s family to condole with them and assess the security situation in the area.
During the visit, Ama described the deceased as an asset to his family and Anambra State, noting that his contributions to the development and security advocacy efforts of the state would be greatly missed.
He reassured the family and residents that the command would pursue the investigation with determination, while urging residents to continue to have confidence in the police and the ongoing probe.
Nwosu and the unidentified victim were reportedly shot dead at separate locations on Sunday.
Nwosu was killed along S.M. Okeke Street, Amaikwo, Awka, while the second victim was gunned down along Capital City Road, Amaenyi, Awka.
The motive for the killings has yet to be established, while the incidents have heightened tension in parts of the state capital and prompted security operatives to intensify patrols and other security measures.
Speaking after the condolence visit, Ama said the strategic meeting was part of efforts to strengthen security operations and reassess intelligence and information received from the public.
He said, “The meeting is aimed at strengthening security operations and sustaining the fight against violent crime, and to intensify efforts towards identifying and apprehending the perpetrators.
“We also paid a condolence visit to the family of late Isaac Nwosu, who lost his life in a recent security incident in Awka.
“The late Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as Azia, was an asset to the state. He will be greatly missed not only by the family but also by Anambra State and the Anambra State Police Command, especially for his service during the command’s security advocacy and other activities.”
The CP added that the relevant operational and investigative units had been directed to intensify efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killings and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“To this end, the relevant operational and investigative units have been directed to intensify efforts towards identifying and apprehending the perpetrators,” he said.
Ama further urged residents of Anambra to remain calm and continue to support the police as investigations into the incident progress.
“We reassured the family and residents of Anambra State that the command would pursue the matter with determination, while urging Ndi Anambra to keep believing in the integrity of the force and the investigative process over the unfortunate incident,” he said.
