APC moves to replace Ganduje after sudden resignation

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has confirmed that consultations are underway to replace its former National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, who resigned last week to attend to personal matters.

Speaking on Sunday Politics, a Channels Television programme, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, described the development as “extraordinary” and assured that the party is acting swiftly to fill the leadership vacuum.

“The NEC meeting will be convened imminently. No date has been fixed, but consultations are ongoing and we’ll reach a consensus soon,” Morka said.

Ganduje’s resignation was officially announced on 27 June. In his letter, he expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for the opportunity to lead the party. Following his exit, Deputy National Chairman (North), Ali Bukar Dalori, was named Acting National Chairman, pending a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to elect a substantive replacement.

Ganduje, a former governor of Kano State (2015–2023), took office as APC chairman in August 2023 after Abdullahi Adamu’s resignation. His tenure was controversial, with critics arguing that his appointment violated the party’s zoning principles.

Morka also dismissed speculations that former Kano governor Rabiu Kwankwaso might be joining the APC, stating, “We’ve had no discussions and made no determination on that.”

He further denied reports of internal crisis within the party and rejected claims that President Tinubu was displeased with Ganduje before his resignation.

Ganduje was appointed Chairman of the Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) in January 2025 and is reportedly under consideration for a non-career ambassadorial post.
