Army declares three-day mourning for 17 soldiers killed in Niger

The Nigerian Army has announced a three-day mourning period in memory of the 17 soldiers who were killed in a recent attack in Kwana Dutse, Niger State.

The tragic incident, which has deeply shocked the nation, involved a coordinated assault by armed attackers on military bases in both Niger and Kaduna states, leading to the loss of several military personnel.

In a statement made available on the army’s official website and social media account on X platform on Friday, the Nigerian Army said “the mourning period will run from June 25 to 27, 2025, as a mark of respect and gratitude to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the defense of the nation.”

The statement of the Nigerian Army also confirmed the deaths of soldiers as a result of attacks by gunmen on military bases in Niger and Kaduna states.

“During this period, all military institutions and personnel across the country will fly the Nigerian Army flag at half-mast,” the statement added.

However, the Nigerian Army directed all its personnel to observe the mourning period with the aim of paying tribute to the fallen soldiers as the move reflects the importance the army attaches to the lives of its personnel.

The army therefore expressed its condolences to the families and friends of the deceased soldiers.

Accordingly, the statement emphasised the army’s commitment to honouring the memories of its personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

The mourning period will provide an opportunity for the nation to reflect on the sacrifices made by soldiers in the defence of the country. It is a sombre reminder of the importance of national security and the role of the military in protecting the nation.
