The 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has extended his heartfelt congratulations to Nigerian poet and spoken word artist, Maryam Hassan, popularly known as Alhanislam, on her recent recognition as the United Nations Global Advocate for Peace.
In a message shared on his official X handle on Monday, Atiku praised Hassan as a “gifted poet and fierce voice for justice”, noting that her artistic expression has long served as a powerful tool for upliftment, empowerment, and unity through advocacy.
He also reflected on a notable moment when Alhanislam beautifully narrated his political journey through a spoken word performance, showcasing her unique talent for blending creativity with meaning.
“I’m incredibly proud of Maryam Bukar Hassan, @Alhan_islam, on her well deserved designation as the UN Global Advocate for Peace. A gifted poet and fierce voice for justice, she has used her art to uplift, empower, and unite. She even once captured my journey through her powerful spoken word.
Her poetry has echoed with compassion, inspired peace, and amplified the hopes of countless young people. Maryam’s elevation is a proud moment for Nigeria and for every young African woman with a dream. Keep soaring,” he wrote.
Reports state that the United Nations officially announced Hassan’s appointment last week, acknowledging her impactful efforts in promoting peace, education, gender equity, and human rights through spoken word poetry.
In her new global role, Hassan is expected to champion youth empowerment, social cohesion, and dialogue, especially in communities grappling with conflict and displacement.

Originating from Borno State, Hassan has graced some of the world’s most renowned platforms — from the African Union to the UN Headquarters — and has emerged as a significant voice for social change, particularly among young African creatives using art for activism.
She has also partnered with both local and global organisations to develop creative avenues for healing, peacebuilding, and community engagement in violence-affected areas.
