Atiku quits PDP over ‘deepening party disputes’

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect.

In a letter dated 14 July 2025 and addressed to the Chairman of PDP, Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area, Adamawa State, Atiku cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for his decision.

He stated that the party’s current direction no longer aligns with its founding principles, prompting him to sever ties.

“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the letter began.

“I take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude for the roles and opportunities the Party has afforded me.

“Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and twice representing the Party as its Presidential candidate remains one of the most significant chapters of my life.

“As a founding member of this esteemed Party, making this decision is deeply painful. However, I believe it is necessary to part ways due to the direction the Party has taken, which I feel strays from its core values. These irreconcilable differences leave me with no choice.

“I extend my best wishes to the Party and its leadership. Thank you once again for the opportunities and support.”

Atiku served as Nigeria’s Vice President under President Olusegun Obasanjo from 1999 to 2007. He later contested the presidency under the PDP banner in 2019 and 2023, but lost to Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Tinubu, respectively.
