Suspected bandits have reportedly killed an inspector of the Nigeria Police Force in Oyo State after ambushing a patrol team at the Budo Masalasi border post area of the state.
The attack, which occurred over the weekend, sparked tension within the community, as both residents and security operatives raised concerns about the rising wave of violent assaults in the area.
Reports indicate that the patrol team was carrying out routine security operations when armed attackers laid an ambush and opened fire on the officers.
In the ensuing gun battle, the inspector sustained fatal injuries and later died.
Other members of the patrol team were also wounded during the attack and were taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment, although their conditions were not immediately made known.
The name of the deceased officer has not yet been released, pending official notification of his family by the police.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed that a manhunt had been launched to track down the attackers.
He said the Commissioner of Police had ordered an immediate and thorough investigation into the incident, aimed at bringing those responsible to justice.
“There was an attack on police operatives during which an inspector, while courageously repelling the attack, paid the supreme price in the line of duty,” Ayanlade said.
“Immediately this information was received, the Commissioner of Police ordered an immediate manhunt and a comprehensive investigation. Preliminary findings indicate that some of the attackers sustained bullet injuries, and operatives are currently on their trail,” he added.
The police spokesperson assured residents that adequate security measures were being intensified to prevent further attacks and to protect lives and property across the state.
He also appealed to the public to remain vigilant and support security agencies by reporting anyone with gunshot wounds, those seeking suspicious medical treatment, or unfamiliar individuals seeking refuge anywhere in the state.
