BREAKING: Supreme Court sets April 22 for hearing of PDP appeals

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has scheduled April 22 to hear appeals linked to the leadership dispute within the Peoples Democratic Party.

The appeals were lodged by a faction of the party led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, a former Minister of Special Duties, contesting earlier rulings delivered by the Court of Appeal of Nigeria on March 9.

A five-member panel of the apex court, led by Justice Mohammed Garba, fixed the hearing date on Tuesday after approving a request for an accelerated process.

The court also shortened the timeline for filing briefs, instructing respondents to submit their responses within five days, while appellants were given two days to reply.

The appeals arise from appellate court decisions that upheld earlier judgments of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which barred the PDP from proceeding with its planned national convention until it complies with statutory requirements, including the Electoral Act and internal party rules.

The Federal High Court rulings, delivered by Justices James Omotosho and Peter Lifu, followed suits filed by aggrieved party members, including former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido.

Several key political figures were present during Tuesday’s proceedings, including Seyi Makinde, alongside Turaki and other party stakeholders.
