Tear gas has reportedly been fired at participants gathered at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos to commemorate the #EndSARS movement.
The incident occurred on Tuesday as Nigerians marked six years since the October 20, 2020, Lekki Toll Gate shootings, which became a defining moment in the nationwide protests against police brutality.
The #EndSARS movement began in October 2020, with young Nigerians demanding an end to police brutality, extortion, harassment and abuses associated with the now-defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
The Lekki Toll Gate became a major site of the protests after security operatives opened fire on demonstrators on October 20, 2020.
Since then, activists and supporters have continued to use the anniversary to remember victims and demand justice, accountability and reforms in the Nigeria Police Force.
Details of Tuesday’s incident, including the circumstances surrounding the reported use of tear gas and whether anyone was arrested or injured, have yet to be independently confirmed.
