Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has described the late President Muhammadu Buhari as a patriot who did his utmost to promote Nigeria’s progress and development.
Several prominent Nigerians have also paid tribute to the former president, who died on Sunday at the age of 82 in a clinic in London.
Obasanjo, in a statement issued through his Special Assistant on Media, Mr Kehinde Akinyemi, on Sunday in Abeokuta, expressed sadness over the news of Buhari’s passing.
“It is with a heavy heart that I received the news of the passing of a colleague, a comrade, a cool patriot and a soldier, General Muhammadu Buhari,” Obasanjo said.
He noted that Buhari had played his part as a soldier, administrator, and statesman, among the many responsibilities he undertook throughout his life.
“At a time like this, we need the collective experience and statesmanship of all those who have led this country to help us navigate the challenges we face,” Obasanjo added.
He concluded by saying, “Buhari will be sorely missed. May his soul rest in perfect peace.”
