Bus crash in Ethiopia kills 28

At least 28 people have been killed and several others injured after a bus plunged into a deep ravine in northern Ethiopia, local authorities confirmed on Monday.

The accident occurred along a route between Dessie city in the Amhara region and the capital, Addis Ababa, when the bus reportedly veered off the road and fell about 100 metres into a ravine.

Officials said the crash left “many others” with varying degrees of injuries, while survivors were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment. The exact number of passengers on board has not yet been disclosed.

Local authorities stated that an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the crash.

Road accidents are frequent in Ethiopia, Africa’s second most populous country, where poor road conditions and limited safety enforcement contribute to recurring fatalities on highways.

Images shared by regional officials showed the badly damaged bus resting on a hillside after the crash.

The incident is among the deadliest road accidents in the country in recent years, adding to a series of similar tragedies, including a 2024 crash in which more than 70 people were killed when a vehicle carrying a wedding party plunged into a river.

Emergency responders continue to assess the situation as authorities work to account for all passengers involved in the accident.
