Bye-Election: Soludo declares LP, ADC Dead in Anambra

Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, declared that the Labour Party (LP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are “dead” and “non-existent” in the state following Saturday’s by-elections.

He made the remarks on Sunday at an event in Nanka, where members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) gathered to celebrate their victory.

Taking a swipe at one of his predecessors, Peter Obi, who backed ADC candidates, Soludo insisted that “ADC does not exist in Anambra. We showed it yesterday. Labour Party is dead,” to the applause of APGA supporters dressed in party colours.

Soludo said the ADC coalition had attempted to use the by-election to test its popularity but failed, stressing that “the people spoke overwhelmingly with over 75%. APGA is our movement.”

In the Anambra South Senatorial District race, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared APGA’s Emmanuel Nwachukwu the winner with 90,408 votes, defeating Azuka Okwuosa of the All Progressives Congress (19,847 votes) and ADC’s Donald Amangbo (2,889 votes). Nwachukwu will replace Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who died in July 2024.

APGA also won the Onitsha North Constituency 1 seat in the State House of Assembly, with Ifeoma Azikiwe emerging victorious. Soludo noted that this constituency is Obi’s home base, adding that despite efforts by opposition politicians to rally against APGA, “the people of Anambra spoke.”

He concluded that the results signalled a resounding rejection of both the ADC and the Labour Party in the state.

Soludo, a former Central Bank of Nigeria governor, is seeking re-election on the APGA platform in the November 8, 2025, governorship poll.
