China has expressed strong concerns over the latest trade restrictions imposed by the United States, telling American officials the measures risk undermining recent efforts to stabilise economic relations between the two countries.
According to Chinese state media on Thursday, Beijing raised the issue during talks between senior trade officials from both nations.
China and the United States spent much of last year engaged in an escalating trade dispute before easing tensions after US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping reached a truce during a meeting in October.
However, recent developments have threatened that fragile understanding.
Last week, Beijing criticised fresh US tariffs imposed on China and 59 other countries over allegations of forced labour, warning Washington against reigniting a trade conflict.
China also accused the United States of attempting to suppress its businesses after Washington prohibited the import of humanoid and quadruped robots manufactured outside the US.
During a video conference on Thursday, Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng met with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to discuss bilateral trade issues.
According to China’s state news agency, Xinhua, the Chinese delegation conveyed its “serious concern” over the latest US economic and trade restrictions targeting Chinese businesses.
Xinhua described the discussions as candid, constructive and comprehensive, adding that both sides exchanged views on maintaining stable economic and trade relations while addressing outstanding concerns during the next phase of negotiations.
Meanwhile, President Trump had invited President Xi to visit the United States in September during his trip to Beijing in May, although the proposed visit has yet to be officially confirmed.
