Commercial drivers advised to install cameras to curb insecurity

Commercial drivers across the country have been advised to install dashboard cameras, commonly known as “dash cams”, as part of efforts to curb rising insecurity on highways.

The call was made by Sterling Human Resource ok Development and Logistics Limited in a statement issued on Friday by its Public Relations Officer, Idowu Fulfilment.

The company said the move is necessary in response to increasing cases of banditry, kidnapping, and violent attacks on inter-state travellers, urging transport operators to adopt technology-driven safety measures.

It stressed that tackling insecurity on Nigerian roads requires collaboration between private operators, transport unions, and security agencies.

“The increasing rate of attacks on commuters, particularly on inter-state routes, requires a coordinated effort between private sector actors, transport operators, and security agencies.”

The statement added that installing dash cams in commercial buses, taxis, and logistics vehicles would help provide real-time visual evidence, support investigations, and assist law enforcement agencies in tracking criminal activity.

It further noted that such devices could deter crime, capture suspicious behaviour, and improve accountability in the transport sector.

The company also called on drivers, fleet operators, and transport unions to prioritise passenger safety by investing in surveillance tools, while urging government agencies to consider policies that encourage or mandate their use.

It described road safety as a shared responsibility and encouraged the integration of simple technology into transport operations to strengthen security and improve crime response.
